Creating Meaning

A sign can be any physical form to which we give meaning, including words, pictures, colours, clothes, etc.

Two different ways people could see this cover:

- Fashionable, autumnal, expensive, Zendaya, pretty, stylish, golden, makeup, jewels, dress-up, fancy

- Model, boring, not colourful, uninteresting, clothing

Connotation: The deeper meaning - what we associate with the word

Connotations

Gun: Violence, murder, America, police

Clown: Horror, Pennywise, balloons, creepy

Thor: Comedic, mythology, Marvel, Avengers, strong, hero, powerful

• Pink - feminine
• Jewellery - Feminine
• Whole outfit implies femininity - Dress, makeup, hair blowing in the wind
• "The new fragrance" - new, different

• The shadow is like a monster - mouth open, clawed hands
• The children are in his shadow
• The children are in a dark and gloomy place, looks like a tiny island - stranded, cant escape
• The children are sticking together - they are allies
• The children dont have any parents with them and are holding a suitcase - they are alone and looking for somewhere to stay
• The children are wearing black - colour of death
